Chapter Sixteen

I shuffled my feet nervously, glancing down at my shoes as I waited for someone to open the door. I’d been putting it off for a while, but it was about time I paid my parents a visit, after all, I hadn’t seen them since March. I wasn’t sure if they’d be happy or angry to see me. I was half hoping no one would be in, so I could turn around and go back home, knowing that I’d at least made an effort. These visits made me uncomfortable, so I preferred to keep them to a minimum. All I ever got from my mum was an interrogation and my dad just followed whatever she said; all the time was feeling like a big fat failure. If only J was here. He always made me feel reassured and like a better version of myself – he saw no flaws in me, only my strengths.

Last night with J had been fantastic, he was an amazing lover. He had surprised me in so many ways since that day I first met him at the bar. He was fast growing to become an important part of my life; he even made me forget about Tyrone for a while. I found myself constantly looking forward to our next date. I couldn’t wait to see him again.

The door swung open and my mum’s poker face greeted me as she spoke, “You should have called first. We weren’t expecting you.”

“Hi mum,” I feigned a smile, “how’s your Sunday been?”

“Oh same as usual, me and your dad went to church, we’re just having a rest now - well your dad is – I’ve got some things to sort out for tomorrow.

Leave your shoes by the landing – you should know this by now.”

My mum led me to the sitting, room, shouting up, “Patrick, Tamara’s here.”

“So, to what do we owe this visit?” my mum said unsmilingly, “It’s been what, four months now. You been busy? How’s work?”

I wasn’t sure which question to answer first; whilst I was still trying to decide, my dad came in the room. I got up to give him a hug, “Hi dad.”

“Hi darling,” he replied, kissing me on the cheek. “Long time,” he smiled, looking me up and down, “so you’ve finally been eating, huh? You look good… happy.”

“I am happy, dad,” I replied. Before he sat down, I asked, “would anyone like a drink or something?”

“No,” my parents chorused.

“We just had some tea and cake not so long ago,” my dad explained, “you know I can’t resist your mum’s ginger cake, I had three whole slices!”

“Dad,” I laughed, “you know you have to watch out for your cholesterol levels.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” my dad said, keen to change the subject. “So what’s new?”

I looked at my dad quizzically, as if he was speaking in riddles.

“What your dad means,” my mum elaborated, “is – have you got someone in your life?”

I was silent, looking down at my hands.

“This ‘Tyrone’ character, we met and heard about him a few times, then nothing.
